European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
